2013 – 1st Tech Seminar – 4 Wheel Disc Brake Conversion by Ron Chernek
Posted: March 25, 2013 in Club MeetingsIn our first tech seminar (2013 series) we discussed 4 wheel disc brake conversions for Novas. This topic would likely be of interest to anyone who is not concerned about maintaining absolute originality of their Nova.
First, let’s talk about why you might want to consider this upgrade.
Many years ago, when the brake systems were designed for these vehicles, most manufacturers used a similar technology. Note: Stopping distances were comparable for most cars across the board. Disc brake systems started to emerge as OEM options — mostly on 2 wheel disc/drum configurations with a handful of 4 wheel disc options in higher performance packages on higher end platforms.
With today’s technology in the OEM market, most lower-end braking systems provide equal or often superior performance than what our old Novas could provide. Sad but true and from a safety standpoint — not a good position to be confronted with in today’s traffic, especially in the Baltimore corridor and Route 30 in York.
During the seminar, we touched on these points:
– the hardware differences between disc and drum brake systems.
– master cylinders, how bore size affects pressure and volume, the necessity to bench bleed.
– differences in distribution blocks and proportioning valves.
– how disc brakes better dissipate heat and that size does matter, increasing swept area increases efficiency.
– plumbing the hydraulics and how the system can be tuned using differing piston sizes in the calipers as well as adjustable proportioning valves.
We also examined an installation for a rear disc conversion sold through NNN and how this package manages the parking brake with the staggered shock arrangement.
Throughout the seminar any 1st Chapter Member was free to ask questions, share comments and their personal experiences for the benefit of the group. All in all I think the discussion was well received. Attendees left with knowledge gained or refreshed — the true intent of the seminar.
So with that, let’s get your comments!
The ladies were rocking their own kind of “talent sharing time” at the March meeting where we learned that painting anything, especially wine bottles, was fun and ultimately very colorful!
From Liz’s garden bouquet, to Val’s African art, to Karen’s purple grapes to Deb’s exotic contemporary floral show.. the craft was a blast! What’s next ladies?
1st Chapter NNN’s 2013 elected President, Al Kuhn, Jr. a/k/a “Scooter” took his newly assigned duties with gusto as he led the March meeting at the Chernek’s home with enthusiasm and conviction. “I’d like to lead our club forward by going ‘back to the basics’, he said, “with a little less talk and more action — fun activities, knowledge sharing, and get-togethers.”
Members shared the types of activities they’d like to participate in (see list of activities below and a short list of car shows by dates). We will expand on these shows/events with more details to follow. We want to encourage input from all NNN 1st Chapter Members and Nova newbies who want to join our club.
Here’s the scoop on the Chapter’s evolution!
- Car cruises and car shows in local and regional areas
- Events that may co-mingle our chapter with other car clubs and enthusiasts
- Tech Seminars and knowledge sharing of talents, tools, time – (electrical systems, AC systems, R12-R134 cooling conversion, interior/upholstery) coming in 2013!
- National Events – Charlotte, NC – Registration Form
- Car Races
- Facility, garage, museum tours
- Craft time explored by the women’s group
